Get the Most Out of Microsoft Edge in Windows 10

Microsoft ships its latest operating system, Windows 10 with a new and simple web browser. It has many new features which will probably attract more users towards Windows 10. Microsoft Edge replaces Internet Explorer as the default browser. Anyway, IE isn't removed from OS yet, and it'll never be removed.

Although Internet Explorer 11 is simple and easy to use but it hasn't as many features as Microsoft Edge. Have doubt? Read this post. In this post I'll provide you various tips and tricks to get the most out of the Microsoft Edge.

Customizing the Start Page and New Tab Page
By default, you'll see Top Sites and your News Feed in the Start Page. You can modify it to show only Top Sites, or you can use a blank page instead! See the following points to know how.
  • Open the New Tab page and click on the "customize" link at the far right corner of the search box.

  • Now choose your desired option for your New Tab page. You can choose to show Blank Page, Top Sites, or Top Sites and your News Feed.

  • Click on the Save button.
  • Done!
You can also customize the Start page in your Microsoft edge web browser. It's the page which is opened when you launch the browser. You can change it easily.
  • Click on the "More Actions" button at the top right corner of the browser.

  • Now click on the "Settings". It'll now show you various settings like Choosing a theme.
  • Scroll down to the "open with" section and select the option according to your need. I have personally set a specific page which launches whenever I open Microsoft Edge.

Tip: Choose the New Tab page, that way you can set a blank page to open when you start the browser!
  • To choose a specific page to be launched on the browser's startup, click on the "a specific page or pages" and type the URL of the page in the "Enter a web address" text field and press enter.

Tip: You can choose multiple pages to open on Microsoft Edge's startup. Click on the plus (+) button and enter another web address in the "Enter a web address" text field.
  • Done!
Cortana
Cortana is well integrated into this web browser. You'll need to enable Cortana in your system. It'll not work if you're not in the region where Cortana is available. Anyway, you can change the reason for your Computer, however it is not recommended.

To use it...
  • Just type a question in the address/search box of the New Tab page.
  • You can type any basic questions like Weather in [city] or definition and meaning of words.
Adding the Home button and Favorites bar in the Edge Window
Yes! You can add favorites and Home button in your browser's window! See below to know how.

To add Favorites Bar...
  • Click on the "More Actions" button in the top right corner of the Edge.
  • Scroll down to option that says Settings. It''ll now show you many Settings.
  • Favorites Bar setting is given at the top of the Setting page. Just drag the slider given below the "show the favorites bar" to ON. It'll be enabled immediately.

To add the Home Button...
  • Click on the "More Actions" and then go to "Settings".
  • Scroll down to the "Advanced Settings" section and click on the "View Advanced Settings" button.

  • Now click on the button given below "show the home button" option. See the image given below.

  • Replace "about:start" with the URL of your Home Page.
  • Done.
There are many more options given below the Home button setting, namely Block pop-ups, Use Adobe Flash Player, Always use caret browsing and Privacy & services. You can disable the use of Flash Player for security reasons or leave it as it's set by default.

Enabling the Always use caret browsing option will allow you to select text using your Keyboard. It is not recommended to turn on this option, instead press F7 button whenever you want to select the ext from a web page.

To use caret browsing for selecting text...
  • Press F7 button. It'll place the text cursor on the web page
  • Move the cursor in front of the paragraph or text which you want to select and Press SHIFT + Arrow keys at the same time.
  • Press SHIFT + Right arrow key to select the texts in the right direction or SHIFT + Left arrow key to select the texts in the left direction.
  • Press CTRL + C to copy the selected texts in your clipboard.
  • Done.
Privacy and Services
Here you can manage your saved passwords, change the default search engine, block cookies etc. You can customize the Privacy using Advanced setting of Microsoft Edge.

  1. Click on the More Actions in the top right corner of the Edge window and then click on the Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Advanced Settings section and click on "View Advanced Settings" button.
  3. Now scroll down to Privacy and Services section. You'll see various options in this section. Each options are explained below.
First option: The first setting in the Privacy and services section is an option that allows you to configure offer to save passwords. Turn Off this option if you don't want Microsoft Edge to offer you the option to save your passwords on login pages like Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon etc.
Click on the "Manage my saved passwords" link to see your saved passwords. You can remove any passwords saved in edge using this Password Manager.

Second option: It allows you to save form entries like your Name, address, mobile number etc. You can turn off this option.

Third option: It allows you to include Do not Track requests with your browsing traffic. However, many websites may still collect and use your browsing data to serve you customized Ads. It's recommended to enable this option.

Fourth option: It allows you to enable or disable Cortana in Microsoft Edge. If you don't want Edge to provide you definitions & other information using Cortana, disable this option.

Fifth option: It allows you to change the search engine in Microsoft Edge. Follow the following steps to change the search engine and enable suggestions when you type.
  • Click on the drop-down menu given below "Search in the address bar with" and click on <Add new> button.
  • Choose Google Search or any other search engines from the suggestions and click Add as default button.
Sixth option: This option allows you to enable suggestions from your default search engine when you type. It's recommended to enable this option.

Seventh option: This option allows you to enable or disable saving of cookies. It's recommended to choose "Don't block cookies" option from the drop-down menu below the Cookies option. However, you can disable third party cookies.

Eighth option allows you to toggle the option to let the site to save protected media licenses on your Computer. Leave this option Enabled.
Ninth and tenth option allows you to customize Prediction Service and SmartScreen Filter. Enable both the options if these are disabled.

Sharing Web Pages and Screenshots
Microsoft Edge allows you to share any web pages to social networking sites. However, you'll need to install the appropriate apps.

If you want to share to Facebook then install Facebook app from store or if you want to share to Twitter then install Twitter app from Store.

After installing the appropriate apps from Windows Store you can share the web pages by clicking the Share button in the top right corner of the Edge.

You can also share screenshots of your web pages. To share screenshot Click on the Share button and choose Screenshot from the drop-down menu (or title of the web page) given in the Share Panel.

Favorites and Reading List
To add the web pages to Favorites...
  • Visit the page you want to save to favorites from Microsoft Edge and click on the Star icon given in the Address Bar.
  • And choose Favorites heading.
Tip: You can add that web page to Favorites Bar. Just tap the drop-down menu given below "create in" and choose "Favorites Bar". You can also create a new folder or change the title of the web page.
  • Click on Add button.
To add any web page to Reading List...
  • Visit the web page you want to add to the reading list and click on the Star icon in the address bar.
  • Choose Reading List heading.
  • Rename the title and click on Add button.
You can browse the Reading List and favorites from the HUB. Click on the Hub button in the top right corner of the Edge window and browse the Favorites, History, reading Lists and Downloads.

Annotations
It's an interesting feature. Using this feature you annotate any web page and save it to OneNote, Favorites or Reading List.
  • Click on the "Make a Web Note" icon in the top right corner of the Edge Window.
  • You can now use Pen to write, Highlighter to highlight texts, Add a note or copy individual parts of the web page. Use Eraser to remove the customizations.

  • Click on the Save button to save the page to OneNote, favorites or Reading Lists. Click share button instead to share the page.
Flags Page
There is a Flags page in Microsoft Edge to enable experimental features. Type "about:flags" in the address bar and hit enter to load the Flags page.

Pin to Start and Open with Internet Explorer
You can Pin any web page to Start Menu using Edge. Follow these steps...
  • Click on "More actions" icon from the top right corner of the Edge window and click in "Pin to Start" option.
To open the current web page in Internet Explorer...
  • Click on the "More actions" and select "Open with Internet Explorer" option.
More features...

Dark theme mode: Microsoft has added a new option to enable Dark Theme in Edge. You can enable or disable the dark Theme from More actions > Settings > Choose a theme.

Developer tools: You can open the Developer Tools by pressing F12 button or from More actions > F12 Developer Tools.

Ad Blocker: Currently, Microsoft Edge doesn't support extensions but it'll be added soon. However, you can use Adguard for Windows.
