How to Change Windows 7 Logon Screen Wallpaper

To achieve this, we will first edit the existing registry, if there isn't required DWORDS value than we will need to create one. Don't worry, if you aren't understanding what all these means as you will not need to learn anything about this. I am going to explain it to you step by step. Now follow the steps carefully.
  • At first, open Windows Key + R and search for regedit in the given search field. You will be prompted for administrator access. Just gran access.

  • Now right click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click on Find from the menu that appears.

  • After that search for OEMBackground. Make sure to select only "values" on "look at" field. See the image given below to know more. Or in the Registry Editor navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background.

Find OEMBackground
  • Right Click on the OEMBackground DWORD and click on Modify. If there isn't any DWORD named OEMBackground than just right click anywhere in the white space and create new DWORD (32 bit) value and name it as OEMBackground.
  • Now right click on OEMBackground DWORD and click on Modify button. Set the value data to 1 as given in the image below.

  • Click OK. Now you can close the Registry Editor.
We have now finished the registry tweak to use our custom image as logon screen background in Windows 7 PC. It's time to apply our new image as slash or logon screen background. Follow the stesp explained below carefully.
  • Press Windows + R key to open the RUN. Now find for C:\Windows\System32\oobe from the run. Searching for it will open Windows Explorer with folders and files in it.

  • Look for the folder named as info in the Windows Explorer in C:\Windows\System32\oobe. There are chances that, you will not find any folder named as info there. So create a new folder and named it as info.
  • After creating the folder named 'info', open the folder and create a new folder inside info and name it backgrounds. You will keep the custom logon screen wallpaper in the backgrounds folder.
  • After getting the wallpaper which you want to use as custom logon or splash screen wallpaper, rename the wallpaper to backgroundDefault. It is very important that you have renamed the wallpaper to 'backgroundDefault', otherwise custom wallpaper will not set.
  • Done! Now copy your desired wallpaper to C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds and rename the wallpaper to backgroundDefault and enjoy custom logon screen background in your Windows 7.
